Practice Karma Yoga

img_2287Yoga is so much more than just the poses (asanas) that it’s most well known for.  Traditionally there are actually four main paths of Yoga – Raja (mind/body control), Bhakti (devotion), Jnana (knowledge) and Karma (action).

They all seek the goal of union.  Union of body, mind and soul and oneness.  Yoga is when you experience everything as connected.  We are all waves in one large ocean.  Yoga helps you to see the ocean, and not just an isolated wave.

Karma means many different thing to different people, but the most common thing I hear is that if you do bad things, then what goes around comes around! Well that doesn’t really have anything to do with Karma Yoga.  Karma Yoga is the Yoga of action.  It’s about giving and serving others without looking for anything in return.

Our egos can often get in the way and we give to get something back in return.  In Karma Yoga, action is taken selflessly, without any attachment to the outcome or reward.  The most famous Karma Yogi was Mahatma Gandhi.

With Christmas just around the corner, there is no better time than now to start practising Karma Yoga!  Christmas is supposed to be about joy and giving but it’s actually become a retail festival.

The amount of debt and needless consumerism is predominant and (in my humble opinion!) it needs to stop! It causes so much stress and needless spending.  Those with little money feel it the most during this time.

So how can you help? You can practice Karma Yoga in so many different ways –  by visiting an elderly neighbour who may be lonely or isolated, volunteering your time to a worthy cause, speaking up about an issue that you are passionate about, only buying ethical and responsibly grown products or random acts of kindness!

You can also practice it with us here at the Chakra Hut!  We are putting up 2 baskets for donations of toys that will be handed into East Dunbartonshire Council.  They are distributing them to children in need before Christmas, and also one for non-perishable food items for the local food bank.

Every Thursday until December we will be running Meditate & Donate classes @ 6.00pm (for a 6.15pm meditation start) which are donations based and drop in.  You will be guided through a 30 minute meditation to help you relax and unwind.  There will also be some Sunday Karma Yoga classes coming up which will be donations based too.
